Our History
Harold Hiemstra founded Hiemstra Optical in June of 1967 with the guiding principle that “making each customer happy one at a time is far more important than simply having a lot of customers.” That philosophy has never changed.
At Hiemstra Optical, we take the time to find the right eyewear solution for each individual, delivering quality eye care products that provide the best vision possible. Today, we proudly serve our communities across five West Michigan locations — continuing Harold’s legacy of personal, trusted care for every patient who walks through our doors.
Meet the Business Owner
Todd Totzke
Vice President & Owner Since 1981
Todd Totzke is the great-nephew of Hiemstra Optical founder Harold Hiemstra, and has been a licensed optician and Vice President/Owner of Hiemstra Optical since 1981. With over 40 years of hands-on experience, Todd oversees the daily operations of all five Hiemstra Optical locations and specializes in ensuring an exceptional customer experience for every patient.
He currently serves as Practice Manager of the Portage and Paw Paw locations, where his commitment to Harold’s founding principle—personal, one-on-one care—remains as strong as ever.
